Inductive sensors - How they work
Inductive sensors are based on the physical principle of generating electrical currents/voltages through moving magnetic fields. The sensor is robust and operates over a distance—i.e., contactless. Direct contact with the material is not necessary—it is wear-free.
This so-called switching distance usually varies depending on the design and manufacturer and allows for use in relation to a metal object. Above a certain distance difference to the metallic surface, the field of the coil in the sensor is closed. The resulting voltage—actually the voltage change—determines the output signal.
Inductive sensors with a long switching distance trigger the signal sooner. If the switching distance is short, the object must be very close to the sensor for triggering.
Inductive sensors from Wagner – NSS
This is exactly where the NSS proximity switch set from Wagner scores points in the application.
The sensor is cylindrical and includes threads and a knurled knob. The thread allows the sensor to be positioned with high precision at the distance from the object and for the specific application or material used.
The metal of the application, due to its conductivity, also has a direct influence on the switching behavior and the necessary proximity to enable the inductive function. The visible knurling serves to secure the system after adjustment.
The inductive sensor from Wagner has a special switching field that radiates forward. This prevents unwanted interference from the surroundings when screwed in. This feature makes the sensor highly flexible in use. When flush-mounted – for example, in the stop screws of our swivel units – NSS inductive sensors can acknowledge the exact end stop (!) with the utmost precision . This enables shock absorber failure detection before expensive consequential damage occurs.

Our units can also accommodate inductive sensors from other manufacturers. We offer a mounting kit for clamping these into the stop screws.
